Note: I have synesthesia--some of this might be a little strange sounding without that context. Bear with me, you can still do this without synesthesia.
Chapterprising is the act or intent of starting a new "chapter" of one's life, no matter how small or distinct. The idea is to force the mind into a different headspace, focusing on different things. For example, say you begin in a chapter of studying birds and the headspace "feels" white and airy. You walk at a particular park a lot and you often think about birds, jewelry, and a movie you've recently watched. This is one example of what a chapter could be. Chapters come naturally already as a part of life--when you chapterprise, you force a new one to come along quicker, jumping into the next headspace and curating it for yourself. However, you do not have complete control over the life this new era will take once you've jumped, because how you react or what unexpected things come from the chapter are not entirely predictable. The technique involves using will, planning, psychology, creativity and a little magic.
Beware that once you jump, you cannot go back. Evaluate whether you're ready for this shift in perspective.
HOW TO CHAPTERPRISE:
You must have an idea of what you want this new chapter to be. Write it down. Headspace-jumping is primarily centered on the little details of one's life that accumulate to make it feel a certain way, not necessarily the larger things. If there's a bigger change you are looking for, different techniques are probably required. If you were to deconstruct what the change is comprised of and start from there it would be much easier to incorporate. This technique isn't the same as something like "law of attraction" because it is primarily psychological rather than being focused on wish-fulfilment. As previously stated, chapterprising is meant to change the headspace that one is living in—the habits and hobbies you're focusing on, how you're spending your time, what sorts of things you're thinking about, what music you're listening to—that sort of thing. So try not to get tunnel-vision on material gain.
Write down the themes you want to focus on. Think of some different symbolism and attributes. For example:
THEMES OF THE NEW INCIPENCE: abstract paintings, fate/destiny, corvids, black coffee, black bedsheets, hope, 80s films, smoothness, gardening
Once you've written down general descriptors, you can go more in depth. List what habits, activities and hobbies you want to be engaging in. For example, say you want to take up watercolor painting and you'd like to take bubble baths more often--these are some actions you might be doing more in this new chapter you're ushering in.
Now it's time to decide what you will use to represent this chapter in the 5 senses. This is how you might do it:
- SCENT: wood scents, cinnamon (find a nice candle to burn or something reminiscent of these scents)
- SOUND: ritual ambient, indie rock (find some adjacent albums to play, preferably new to you)
- SIGHT: shades of purple, William Morris textiles, lilies (bring things of this sort to your vicinity/in your living space)
- TASTE: coffee, red grapes (eat/drink these more often)
- TOUCH: smooth new bedsheets, weeds in the garden, yarn (think about what sorts of things you'll be in contact with)
Now think: what actions do you need to take to bring these themes and senses in? You may need to buy that candle and find new music. You may need to clean up or rearrange your living area. If there is a particular theme you want to bring in, maybe you need to find a book, film, or some sort of art that includes that theme to kickstart it. Maybe you want to change some part of your physical appearance such as your haircut. Write these in a list as well.
After you've finished doing everything on this list, you will need to officially confirm the shift by doing a ritual of some sort. This can be a ritual of whatever nature you want--it doesn't have to be "occult". Just do something that signifies the transition from then to now. An easy and effective method is by using a sigil. Generally you want to focus on bringing in a new era, bringing forth change, etc. You can be as specific as you want. You could bury a banana under the alignment of Mars on a Monday and dance around in a circle chanting. You could write "I'm a slug" on a piece of toilet paper and then flush it down the toilet. Do what works for you and experiment; the main tool is INTENT. You want this ritual to separate "the time before" and "the time ahead", so that your brain registers the event as a mark of transition. It is easier to make a change after an event has happened.
Congrats, your new chapter has officially begun. Remember to incorporate what themes, habits, etc. that you've written down in your chapterprising petition. The very beginning of the chapter can be a fragile period, so it will take some willpower to keep it up at first, but you want to basically nurture it as it comes into full force by keeping your thoughts in the places you have intended. If you fail to do this, your chapter has a much less likely chance of going in the direction you wanted. It will still be a new era, just perhaps not the one you originally intended. Life is a strange and chaotic thing and it will take you in whatever way it wants. This is really my method of getting out of a funk. Sometimes I just get stuck in limbo-states and need a little push. My personal method is a little more detailed, and I've only shared the skeleton of the technique--please personalize it and experiment! It's your brain, your life, your headspace. Have fun!
